My mom has always really loved kids. She’s known for nurturing other people’s children when there’s a need. I once had a best friend in middle school who lived with us for a while because he household was abusive. She lived right around the corner but her parents were just fine with her staying with us. She felt like she could talk to my mom about anything and wished that my mom was her mom too. To this day, she calls me her sister and my mother mom. It’s been at least 20 years. My mom is like that when there’s a child in need. She’s willing to jump in to protect or care for that child. She’s pretty cool like that. I think that’s why I’m so protective of children. I feel the need to look out for them even though they’re not mine. When I became I mom some of the things my mom said to me over the years suddenly kicked in. One in particular being that a child shouldn’t have to worry about a thing, that’s the parents job. She used to always remind me that a child shouldn’t have to worry about their next meal or financial strain. It’s not their problem. It lies with the parent. As kids, they don’t ask to be here. That rings true now that I have my own child. I don’t want any worry to cross his face. I don’t ever like to see him sad. I know it’s part of life but, at his young age I want his life to be as carefree as it should. If there are any worries to be had, they lie at the feet of my husband and myself. His biggest concern right now is what book to bring me to read for night night. That’s how I like it. What words of wisdom stick with you from your mom?
