Let’s Start with Grumpy Cat

It has come to my attention that there are some things that we have gotten so used to that didn’t exist until the last 10 years. I feel the need to point them out.  I mean, somebody has to…

Let’s start with Grumpy Cat. Yes, there have been grumpy cats before the “Grumpy Cat”. I have known a few. Why is Grumpy Cat so popular. Is it the quick wit? Could it be the fact that Grumpy Cat speaks the truth that no one else is bold enough to talk about? No, I think it’s that frown. Yes, it’s the full on, smile upside down frown! I love it. Makes me laugh every.time.

Speaking of Grumpy Cat, where did all of these meme’s come from anyway? Who thought of these? Why are they so funny?  Have you seen the one with Kermit the Frog? This one always makes me laugh!

KERMITvia

Who decided this # was a hashtag? Am I the only one who remembers this being a pound sign or the number sign? I’m not alone. There are full on discussions about this, people!

hashtagvia

When and why did we make the switch to hashtag. Now no one will ever know what I’m talking about when I say push the pound sign? I blame you social media.

pound signvia

#whathappenedtothepoundsign #whyhashtag #whostolethepoundsign #iblametwitter

farmers marketvia

There have always been farmers and there have always been markets. Add that to people being more invested into what they are putting in their bodies and we have farmer’s markets everywhere! Maybe it’s an L.A. thing, but just about every neighborhood in the city seems to have a farmer’s market nearby. I love it!

organic-food-1via

It’s seems crazy to have to label food organic. It’s really just food the way it’s supposed to be grown. The fact that is has to be labeled let’s you know that there is way too much being done to our food.

twittervia

Twitter is amazing. I love how you can just jump into a conversation and meet people you wouldn’t have otherwise known before. It’s the only place where it’s OK to butt into a conversation and follow someone. That’s only OK on the Twitter! Speaking of Twitter, are we connected? You can find me here!

app crazy

Apps are so freaking addictive! I use them for shopping, games for my  kids, maps, etc. I have even been reading about an app that helps you pop the perfect bag of popcorn. There really is an app for everything!!! I have way too many on my phone to even count.

Tell me, what else is super common now that didn’t even exist not too long ago?

I remember seeing it and thinking of it as a pound sign, too. My friends mom said outloud, “IMHO” like it was a word…

Everyone from 6 years old owning a cell phone. My child knows how to do more things on my cell phone and tablet (which is pretty much hers) than I do!

There are days I appreciate the conveniences of my phone, it’s apps, the quick conversations via text message, twitter and Facebook. And then there are days I wish it was gone and everyone wasn’t so glued to their phones and social media and we could just slow down and get back to the good ol’ days.

Grumpy Cat is my favorite – as are hashtags. And I totally remember when it was just a pound sign. (Sometimes I have to explain what a hashtag is and it gets to be a bit much.)

I don’t even have a smartphone and apps are addictive. If I did have the phone, I’m sure they’d be even more so. 🙂

That first point definitely made me giggle – I remember a few years ago, my husband’s younger brother (he’s only 13) made a remark to the point of “why does that say hashtag (#) 3”?

The rest of us just started laughing.

haha! i was just watching this documentary on the 90’s, and it’s crazy to think of all the things that were “invented” not too long ago that we use or talk about daily today! stuff like reality tv and the internet and cell phones….part of our day-to-day now, but really haven’t existed for too long!

When I think back on growing up, I am amazed at how much things have changed. Consider the term “Where are you?” That is new. You would have never asked that when I was growing up…you were either standing in front of the person or talking on a land line.

To go along with Grumpy Cat, you definitely need some Doge in your life. If you don’t know doge, here you go: http://runt-of-the-web.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/no.jpg

    July 29, 2014 | 10:53 pm

I remember the pound sign. Keep the pound sign alive!!

I remember pay phones and pagers.

I remember a lot of things.

Twitter- yes, I go there to talk to strangers. I go there to talk about things I wouldn’t talk about with my friends, like the show Big Brother. Then the strangers on Twitter are my besties…. I visit blogs to talk to strangers, too….like now 🙂

  52. Rochelle
    July 29, 2014 | 11:23 pm

That is so funny and true. Why would we change it from pound to hashtag? It’s one less syllable if we just said pound. I still think twitter is the weirdest of all social media. Sometimes I like it, but most of the time I just can’t get into it. Meme’s are funny — where did this name even come from?

  53. Becka
    July 30, 2014 | 3:28 am

I still have to refer to it as the number sign sometimes. So in my head it’s like (number sign)whateveriwanttolink I think it’s super annoying when friends with throw the world hashtag into normal conversation before comments like it’s actually going to do something.

I’m starting to wonder how many people have land lines in their homes now. I probably always will because of the unlimited talk time (for conference calls, etc.) but I’m not sure it’s a very popular thing anymore!

    July 30, 2014 | 10:02 am

Yes! I remember when “#” was a pound sign. Which reminds me, not too long ago, someone asked me what do I call it. I said it depends on where I see it, it has different names. I’m sure as I get older, no one will truly know what a pound sign is…
