Hot Topic Thursday: Y R U So Nasty?

Just a couple of days ago one of my favorite R&B crooners was all over the blogs for basically being nasty. He didn’t spit on someone, show up funky to an event or even get caught up in a sex scandal but instead decided to be downright lewd.

Brian McKnight released a video rambling about some new “adult mix tape” he would be doing and debuting one of its songs. It was disgusting. A different choice of words would have been preferred for sure. Some have described it as X-rated. My beef is that it’s gross and crass. It doesn’t jibe with the image he’s built for decades. It just seems contrived and attention seeking.

He’s been Mr. Romantic all these years and then he decided to be Mr. Porn R&B. What gives? I mean, even R. Kelly has cleaned up his music and image. I’m disappointed. I’m disappointed in the state of music. Maybe I’m all Granny Gump about it, but I don’t understand why innuendo is such a bad thing. Leave something to the imagination sometimes. I don’t need to know every single detail of how you do what you do. For real, I don’t.

Before Whitney Houston’s last album, she spoke about being asked to be more sexual in her music to keep up with the current state of music. She wasn’t cool with that and didn’t give in to the pressure. That doesn’t seem to be the norm these days. People aren’t happy unless they cross that TMI line. Apparently, that’s what makes a hit.

In the case of Mr. McKnight, it makes me wonder if he just gave in to the pressure. Whatever the reason, it’s not a good look. I guess he’s cool with representing himself that way in front of his teen-aged sons. Instead of making me swoon, it just made me want to puke.

Am I alone or has anyone else noticed how badly some music sucks? Also, once you become a parent do you have a responsibility to keep it classy?

You are not alone. I’ve noticed it as well. I don’t really like the the direction that music is going these days. I’ve been shying away from a lot of modern music and going back to the classics. I guess that is what they mean by the golden age for for some of us. Nothing will ever be as good as the music of our past.

I always thought of him as being on the classy side, so this is disturbing. I hate that he sold out in this way. 🙁

I can’t believe that…I never would have expected that out of him!

My husband was just talking about this song the other day! I could not believe it. I guess he is trying to create some buzz.

You are correct. Some songs are way too blunt. I find myself turning the dial on the radio a lot.
I haven’t heard the McKnight song yet, but I’ve heard lots of people talking about it and not in a good way.

Once I read your post, I had to go listen to the song! All I can say is… really?! That is too much for him! You expect those type of songs from some, but definitely not from Brian McKnight. I read a response of his saying something to the effect of he was only having fun and the song is a parody o_0. I think that was just a way to sort of clean it up, because he didn’t expect the backlash.

The best music was in the 90’s these days I just don’t know. Brian surprised me with that mess but these days if you need a paycheck you have to go above and beyond I guess.

There are some songs that are very blunt and sometimes nasty and to be honest, old songs are still better for me because their lyrics have a lot of meaning which we can all relate from..

I’m shocked to read that one of my favorite crooners could be selling out. Funny thing is that I met him when he came to the morning show I was on a few years ago. He was so nice and seemed so real. I hope he re-thinks his decision. How are you feeling Cam?

I’m glad that I’m not the only one that thinks that music sucks lately. I thought I was just becoming a prude, but I don’t even like to listen to the radio anymore. Especially since here they don’t censor American music, and I can just imagine my kid repeating some of those doozies.

There’s so much I can’t listen to b/c I don’t want my kids to hear and repeat!

Yes! I think the reason the music industry, movie industry, etc. sensationalize things, is because it works. I love, love, love having an opinion; I can barely stay away from it. IF we as a society ignored his statement and didn’t give it press, it wouldn’t sell. I always say we could eradicate players if no more women subjected themselves to that crap. But our culture has become so desensitized to crassness that it takes something glaringly unacceptable to shock us. Sad. Great post, as usual;)

The state of music period today is awful. It’s all about how crass/lewd can we get and still get played on the radio? I need XM radio or something because I just can’t listen to most of the stuff that’s on the
    E radio anymore .

i’ve never been a Brian McKnight fan and based on this and the tweets that showed up in my timeline (girl – when i saw he was a trending topic i thought he’d died an infamous twitter death!), i won’t be converting to one. you nailed it. it’s all about giving in AND seeking attention. not a good mix. at all.

I completely agree. I don’t think it’s too much to ask artists NOT to border on that TMI line. I was also disappointed with him. As you said, it doesn’t go with the image that he’s built up this whole time. When I heard about it on the radio last week, I was like “huh?! Is this a joke?!” It must be a joke. Right?

WOW! I had no idea. I think you have to stay true to yourself and I like to think that he hasn’t crossed over like that, but who knows? I guess everybody got bills to pay. lol
However, I am not interested in that type of music from him. Just my two cent.
