Memories – We Made ‘Em

When people say that moms need a break, believe it! When people tell you that you should get away, do it!

I’m back from a much needed retreat! I think that’s what I want to call it anyway, a retreat. Two of my girlfriends and I decided to treat ourselves to an overnight trip. We hit the road and headed south to San Diego. It was the perfect location. Just far enough from our homes in the L.A. area but still close enough that we weren’t stuck in a car forever. This little trip was all that I could have hoped it would be.

There was girl talk, wine, dinner and brunches. With the opportunity to sleep in, we couldn’t quite pull ourselves away for breakfast. I felt like we were close before but I feel even closer to my friends after some time to just be ourselves. It’s easy to forget what it’s like to just be you. Not the mom, not the wife, not the worker bee – just you. We each had a moment, while out shopping, where we just stopped and realized that we weren’t rushing to get through the store. There was no one with us that needed our undivided attention. There was no one waiting on us and there was no where that we had to be. Tasting that freedom again was beautiful. We shared our goals and dreams and provided support and sounding boards for each other. It’s amazing how much fun and how many memories we were able to squeeze in!Β  We made a promise that this is something that we’ll do a few times a year. We’ve already thrown out a possible date for the next one.Β  Napa, anyone?

San DiegoThe other great thing was my babies enthusiasm when I walked back in the house. They were so happy to see mommy. They were screaming and smiling. It was a love fest full of hugs and kisses and snuggles. They told me about the great time they had with my husband. He took them shopping, they had a movie night and went to the park. It was great for him to get some one one one time with them. He works no less than twelve hours a day and they are usually getting in the bed when he comes home. He got a chance to really enjoy his babies.

I know that I’ve only been back a few days but I’ve found that I’m more patient with them. I’m just more relaxed overall. I’ve also come up with a ton of ideas for things I’d like to work on and get off the ground. I woke up Sunday morning and wrote them all down. I didn’t want to forget a thing. Good food, good friends, amazing support – what could be better?! Mission accomplished! I can’t wait to do it again.

Any kid-free trips coming up for you?

How fun! I so wish I had girlfriends that lived closer. I’m in an awkward stage because I work from home + don’t know a lot of people in my area– most of my girlfriends are so far now!

Having time for you whether you have children or not is essential. It only helps to make you stronger so that you can be there for those you love. So glad you had a good time. San Diego is super fun!

I always feel guilty when I’m away from the family. My husband encourages me to look into blog-related conferences because it’s for work. But I feel guilty even for that! I’m excited for a quick few day trip to ThinkTank next month though.

Awww, good for you for getting a much-deserved break from motherhood with your best girlfriends! And bravo to the guys that made it possible. πŸ˜‰ That’s so important to keep your sanity and makes for a better relationship all around.

Hope you can do Napa sometime! Eating/drinking your way through Yountville and the wineries is one of my fav activities. Also, getting oysters along the coast in Tomales Bay is a must-do, if you’re in the area. πŸ™‚

    Hi Cam,

I think when Mommy needs a break an overnight trip is just long enough to do that. Overnight allows you to enjoy your time without feeling guilty – it is just one night! Anything more than that will leave mommy and the kiddos too stressed and defeat the purpose.

Glad you and your girls had a wonderful time down in SD.

    Blessings,
    Victoria

As an older mom, take my word on this… you have to take care of yourself to be able to take care of others. If you are at your best, you’ll have your best to give. πŸ™‚

I haven’t got children myself but I agree that it’s so important to always build in ‘you’ time! You can’t put anyone first unless you look after yourself πŸ™‚ sounds like a great trip!
